Finding a web host and domain name registrar
Searching for good value web hosting can be a time consuming process. Supanames provide good value low cost packages from £13.99 a year and include a free domain name when you sign up.
Another alternative is Heart Internet who offer great value domain names with good value hosting.
1 & 1 also offer good value hosting and domain names.
Netfirms are based in the US, but offer good value packages and exceptional support. Their .com domain names are some of the cheapest you are likely to find.
Making a choice between one of the above suppliers will depend on your personal requirements.
Budget webdesign software
If you're wanting to design your website on a budget and have heard that you should invest in Dreamweaver, GoLive or Frontpage, but don't have the money to, take a look at some of the low-cost and freeware alternatives listed on our budget software page.
FTP using Internet Explorer v5 or v6
There is lots of FTP software which you can download cheaply, or sometimes for free. CuteFTP is a popular choice. However, you can also simply FTP using your browser. Here's how:
Point browser to the ftp hostname supplied by your host prefixing
it with: ftp://. The final address should look something like: ftp://72.31.107.228/ or
a combination of your domain name and your hosts name.
Enter your username
and password as supplied by your host and you will be connected.
If you are presented with an error message, click OK. Go to File on
the browser toolbar, Login as, enter the login information as supplied
to you in the original email from your host and you will be connected.
Recommended Reading
If you are wanting to take your web design seriously, then I would recommend these first 3 books as being fundamental to your learning process and they provide excellent references to look back through when you are more experienced.
These next books are ones which I would recommend for further reading if you want to further your development and are looking at extending your knowledge of marketing your website.
